NOTD: deborah lippmann "CLEOPATRA IN NEW YORK"

If you watched my "What I Got For Christmas" video then you may remember seeing this beautiful bottle of polish amongst the glorious box that was the Sephora Favorites Superstars Beauty Must Haves kit. While it wasn't one of the main propellents of my purchasing the box set it definitely helped in my decision making (it's like when you go to Subway and just want a sub and a drink but you order the combo that comes with chips as well because it's cheaper and what the heck those cheddar sour creams look pretty darn good…). You get me?

I've always admired the beautiful glitter polishes that deborah lippmann creates but have only ever 'treated' myself to them when they've been free in some way or another (this one was something I considered an 'extra' in a kit I would have purchased regardless and the other ["ACROSS THE UNIVERSE"] was something I got with birchbox points) because, while they're stunning, they're not something I'd necessarily say is worth the splurge. I mean, don't get me wrong, they are worth it because they're beautiful but they're not quite worth the price because there are just so many other glitter polishes on the market for much less.
I think I'd sing a different tune if I didn't need to use an opaque base coat under these high end polishes. If you're familiar with glitter polishes though I think you know that you're either going to be paying for bountiful sparkle or for base color and in the case of deborah lippmann you're definitely getting the glitter; though admittedly the trashy girl inside me appreciates that on a fairly stupid level that goes much deeper than my nails.

I don't know how but I think this post somehow got really negative really fast haha.
Honestly, if you're new to deborah lippman like I was when I purchased "ACROSS THE UNIVERSE" you'll probably flip your sh*t over this polish. The consistency is nothing short of a pleasure to work with (none of that goopy glitter bull crap that sparkly polishes are usually made of) and I mean… can we just admire the glittery beauty that is "CLEOPATRA IN NEW YORK"? It's a sheer black base loaded with large and small hexagonal gold glitter that, when layered, creates a depth in your nails that most polishes fail to do. This manicure was/is absolutely gorgeous and had me mesmerized while it lasted on my nails. If you don't mind splurging on nail polish then I'd definitely give this one (or any of the glitters) from deborah lippmann a go; you'll feel absolutely pampered and looking like a true wanna-be-princess.

Have you tried deborah lippmann's "CLEOPATRA IN NEW YORK"?
Feel like it lives up to the hype?
What's your most coveted glitter polish?
Do share!!

xoxo - Cassie

  1. Pretty! I love the depth it creates. How many coats did you put on for that? I've been ogling over the Deborah Lippman polishes I see at Sephora. Haven't tried any of them on though, I'm afraid I'll like it so much that I'll buy them :P Definitely in the future, though!

  3. I've never felt comfortable splurging on nail polish but this is a gorgeous shade!

I would also like to mention that the subway analogy really spoke to me..

  4. It's gorgeous! I actually was sent a polish so similar to that one by Barry M during a swap. I think it's called Gold Mine. Difference being that Cleopatra has hexagonal glitters. Deborah Lippmann polishes are to die for. I have Across The Universe on my nails right now :)

  5. Very nice. I only polish my toes because I am so hard on my hands polish never lasts. So I have nice naturally long nails while it seems everyone else has manicured fake nails. I am a little jealous that they can carry off creatively painted nails and I figure they are jealous that I have natural nails. You always do an excellent manicure on yours. Love the NOTD posts!

    1. Yeah it seems like everyone wants what they don't have!! I feel lucky that nail polish doesn't ruin my nails so I can have the best of both worlds haha :) Thanks so much though I'm glad you enjoy the NOTD posts regardless!

  8. I think my most coveted glitter polish was Deborah Lippmann's Glitter in the Air. But I was at a department store in the US while in NYC in 2012 and I just couldn't bring myself to buy it, even though it was around $20 and probably the cheapest I'd ever encounter it at. It's hard enough to be able to buy in the first place - stockists seem fairly exclusive and I have no idea about online shipping for a single polish. Luckily Revlon Whimsical is apparently a very close dupe so at least there's that :p I love how much depth this polish has - the dark base really makes the gold glitter pop! It looks like the glitter is suspended and you've just captured it for a brief second as it's falling down your nails. I can imagine I'd be staring at my nails quite a bit if I ever painted this on :)

    1. Hahah yes dupes are always appreciated for those of us that just can't bring ourselves to spend our hard earned cash on stupidly expensive nail polish. Regardless, the polishes deborah lippmann makes truly are stunners so I suppose the price is 'worth' it? Ugh, I'll never know!! Glad you like this polish of hers as well :)

  9. I'm not big into nail polish but Deborah Lippmann is one polish that I'm like YES. TAKE MY MONEY. I just love that you don't have to work at all to get the glitter to come out all over the nail. I'm not about working with the gooping to "place" the glitters. Makes me sad D: I'm completely in love with this one! It's so gorgeous and sassy, classy. Yes, sassy, classy, haha. It would have been perfect for New Years, haha! I want to collect all the Deborah Lippmann glitters. I've yet to try any of her colored polished though!

    1. Jess: OMG! Definately give the DL reg colours a go...I only own 2 DL...AcrossTheUniverse and ModernLove, and while for the price I'm not thrilled with having to lay down a base before the glittery ATU, ModernLove is the one and only nail polish that has ever lived up to the claims of stronger, healthier nails. I use pure acetone to remove np and my nail beds usually look beat when I take off polish, not after using DL ModernLove! My natural nails looked better after a week of wearing it.

    2. Hahah yeah when you don't have a very big collection to start with then I'd be like you Jess but for me it's like… I already own 100 nail polishes, do I really need to fork out a 20 for another one? Either way deborah lippmann really is a master of the glitters and, like you said, it's SO nice to not have to fish out the glitters and deal with gloopiness during application. I have yet to try her 'plain' colors either!! I'd love to but… well… refer to the first sentence of this reply hahah.

  10. You know, I can just never bring myself to splurge on Lippmann polishes. Once my dad gave me a random gift card to Amazon--I think he imagined I would use it on like, a BOOK--and I used it for Lippmann Rockin' Robin, which I don't regret. I'm always playing around with these polishes at Sephora but I can never pull the trigger. This one is really lovely, and I especially like the name (like, what does that even mean? WHY is she in New York?).

    1. Hahahahah I know right? I feel the gift card giver has to know that their expectations need to be low when giving a general card like Amazon though ;) Glad you treated yourself that one time and hopefully you can do it many times over in the future; bring on the gift cards (I'm with you on that one)!!

Oh, and also: I have no idea what she's doing in New York… strange corpse of a lady.

  11. Ooooh this is really pretty, but as much as I love love loooove nail polish, I wouldn't spend lots of money on a bottle. Like here in France, OPI polishes are around 14€ (around 19$ !) so I've only got 2 (one my dad bought for me and the other I bought on Fragrance Direct for £3.99) even though there are so many colors I want and it kills me.
I either buy discounted polishes or wait for a coupon or something, ha !

    1. I know, I'm totally with you… that's why I'm excited whenever I can get one for free!! It's such a shame though that 'fancy' nail polishes are so expensive in other countries; I can't imagine how painful that must be (at least for a polish lover like myself)!

  12. Gah this color is crazy pretty- BUT THE PRICE TAG D: I can only justify getting one (or two!) on my birthday, with this one and Across the Universe being my top picks. Just gotta wait till March....... :3

  13. You have to choose between an opaque base that partially obscures the beauty of the glitter, sometimes a lot, or use underwear (another colored polish) for a base coat so you can show the glitter off to it's best advantage. I have a Helmer (Ikea) full of polish and am thinking of putting together a second one, embarrassing since I'm not even a blogger so really have no justification for all that polish, but what can I say? I love polish (and have collected it over a lot of years, a LOT of years). I have one Chanel, my most expensive polish. It's called Malice and is the most beautiful deep, winey red I have ever seen. Since reds are my Achilles heel, well, I have a lot of reds. My rationale (excuse?) is that everyone collects something and polishes are far cheaper than shoes and handbags, not to mention jewelry and such. There are a lot of indie brands out there that retail for around $10 and are reliably high quality. Pretty Serious is my best loved indie. A England also has beautiful shades. Amazing colors, and unlike many foreign made polishes (Aussie and English), available from an American distributor a for very reasonable price. Am I stumping for PS and AE polishes? Not really. Just trying to share beautiful, well crafted polishes with fellow nail aficionados. Cassie, going on what I've seen of your color preferences, I think you would love PS's Claris and Mummy Mush, and AE's She Walks in Beauty glitter might leave you temporarily speechless.
