NOTD: essie "go ginza"

What better way to jump back into blogging than by writing about the familiar? The loved? The obsessed over? My answer will always be nail polish and I'll always have plenty of that lying around (I say it sooo casually but you know they're actually proudly displayed on a wall and immaculately dusted at all times) so I hope you don't mind! Though honestly I never know why I worry about posting about nail polish since anyone who has read my blog even a little would know it's something I do on the (obscenely) regular.

I've been terrible at keeping up with nail polish collections lately ("out of sight, out of mind" translates to "don't know, can't/won't/don't buy" in my book and when I'm beyond broke [which is absolutely a thing and on a completely different level than just broke, mind you] that's something I try to strictly live by) so when I nabbed this out of the new collection display of essie polishes at Target I thought it was a part of a new release… which is/was completely wrong.
I'm not sure if Target was trying to pull off some sort of a sales ploy by putting a bunch of these yesteryear polishes in the Spring 2014 display or if it was just some punks pulling a prank (though honestly that would be a pretty lame prank even by my standards) but either way that's where the stock of "go ginza"'s were and I just couldn't help but throw one (with the utmost delicacy and motherly love) in my basket.

essie's "go ginza" actually hails from their Spring collection of 2013 (according to the trusty world wide web that we weave) but it's exactly what I needed in my life and what I've been looking for. I've been wanting a milky lilac pink for ages but have never found one that was predominantly lilac rather than pink… there's a stupidly profound difference! I was hunting down a lilac with pink undertones not a pink with lilac undertones and gosh darn it the nail polish world seemed to be full of the latter rather than the former. Regardless I have found winner folks!! And a stunner at that.

Ahhh~ bask in its glory while you can people; unfortunately this polish reminds me that before recently I avoided essie polishes, even though they really do have the most stunning collection of colors, because the formula can be (and often is) downright terrible. After even just one day of wear (there was one time where it was two days but pffffft don't care) this has cracks running through every millimeter of its being.

Please ignore my little nail nubs of the moment… as fantastic as they looked last week (the first set of photos in this post) they were driving me absolutely batty.

Not cute essie!! "go ginza" is basically the equivalent of meeting someone suuuuper attractive but then, when you finally work up the courage to go talk to them (horror), realizing that they have B.O. beyond belief. What a shame! What a waste! Time to go cry, ask them out anyways, then tell them to shower and apply deodorant before picking you up at 8 o'clock sharp.
At least that's what I've been doing with this polish… I've repainted my nails at least five times in the past week or two (when did I actually buy this!?!?) because I'm so in love with the color, just not so much with the unavoidable cracks. It's unfortunate but sometimes you just can't help but do ridiculous things when you're in love le sigh~

Have you tried essie's "go ginza"?
Do you have the same problem with the formula cracking after a day or two?
What has been your favorite nail polish color as of late?
Do share!!

xoxo - Cassie

  1. Maybe try Revlon Provence--it's a lavender, but sort of a dusty lavender. I haven't tried the ColorStay line of polishes, but a friend of mine swears by them (if used with the ColorStay topcoat, which is the catch). They are absolutely on my list of things to try.

    1. I actually REALLY like the ColorStay polish even without the ColorStay topcoat (even though that topcoat is fantastic) so I'll definitely have to check that one out, thanks Stephanie!! :)

  2. Hey girl I was wondering if you could do a blog post on moving and living in a state across the country. It would be very helpful if you are willing to share your experience ! P.S you are the cooliest (yes I'm sucking up to get what I want like a baby) nah but honestly you cool.

    1. Hahah thank you for the buttering up!! Very sweet of you even if you have ulterior motives ;) I'll definitely see if I can patch together a post like that sometime soon if it would be helpful to you!

  3. Ha ha! Yes, at first I was like "O.M.G. This is EXACTLY the lavender I've been looking for! I'm in LOVE!" Then, it went to "Oh wow, that really sucks. Especially for a brand that isn't the lowest price point." lol Thanks for another honest (& hilarious) review.

  4. Holy moly, I had no idea nail polishes could crack like that! That's such a bummer, bc the color is friggen fantastic looking. And omg I snorted at your comparison to a stinky hot guy, LOL. XD I just got a color from Julep that's kinda similar, but I almost confused it for a super light pink! Pumped for pastel-goodness for spring, yay! (Saying this as I have a green w-gold fleck jelly polish on....St Pattys came early? Lol!)

    1. Haha yup they definitely can crack like that… it's a bugger when it happens because not even a good top coat can fix it/prevent it from happening :( I'd be on the pastel train with you if it wasn't freaking freezing still here but I hope soon I can get excited with you!!

  5. I love the colour but the cracking is a pain in the arse :/ What topcoat are you using (if you use one at all)? I used to use seche and I noticed it made my nail polish crack too. I have the Catrice "Sing Hey Dirty lilah" polish and it's nice but I think this is a bit more purple-y (I kind of want it but essie are fecking expensive over here!)

    1. Yeah it really is the worst! I'm currently using a topcoat from Revlon (which is utter crap; can't wait until I've used it up) but I tried this polish without a topcoat once and it still did the cracking :( essie is way too expensive of a polish brand for the formula to be poo like this!!

  6. Yikes that is a lot of unsightly creasing. The colour is beautiful though and I'm glad it's something you were particularly looking for. It reminds me a bit of a couple of Revlon polishes ... I think Cloud was one of them (which I believe you have) though that one is a bit bluer and Gumdrop (though I think that one is warmer and a bit more pinky than this which looks more grey).

    1. Haha I know right??? And yes I love "Cloud" but that's a straight up blue (though in the same tonal range as this); "Gumdrop" is one I have yet to check out though so thanks for the recommendation! :)

  7. I'm not a fan of essie polishes as I find them streaky . but I keep buying them because I love the color range .. :-P

    1. Some of them can definitely be streaky but I've found that the formula has become creamier and easier to apply over the years. Regardless that doesn't make up for the nasty cracking!! Darn them for having a beautiful color range…

  10. I absolutely love Essie and the formula but I have heard that there are many people out there that hate the formula. Luckily they last the longest on my nails but that is with a good top coat.
The colour 'In Stitches' clings to nails like no other and I can get up to 2 weeks with no chips :) xx

  14. Awww shucks, its horrible when you finally find THE colour you have been hunting down and then have the formula fail you :'( Essence has a similar colour called "hello marshmallow". Might be worth it since essence polishes are dirt cheap!

  15. I have Go Ginza and I haven't experienced any cracking. I've only worn it once, about 3 coats (I'm paranoid) for about 4 days. I love the color so much! Such a shame your bottle has a weird formula...or maybe I'm the one with an odd bottle? Hmmmm....LOL

  16. I wonder if it's just a body chemistry thing, or maybe due to the base or top coats on some people. I only have 8 Essies (more of a Zoya girl), but I do love the ones I have and have never had the crackle issue with them.
