Rimmel SCANDALEYES Waterproof Kohl Kajal: Swatches + Review!

For whatever reason, it took me until now to realize that wearing black liquid liner without using a black liner on my upper inner lash line (am I making any sense!?) was a terribly un-cute idea. The pale skin spaces peeking through liquid liner and lashes was more obvious than I allowed myself to immediately discern but oh well… better late than never, right?
So I rushed out (well okay, I just made sure to look through the makeup isles the next time I found myself at Target) and nabbed the most hyped kohl liner from the drugstores that I knew of: the Rimmel SCANDALEYES Waterproof Kohl Kajal. And while I must say that this product has its pluses, the minuses far outweigh the aforementioned; one problem solved yet a new problem created? Not exactly a good tradeoff in my books.

First off, I've got to give this kohl pencil credit where it's very well deserved.
For starters, the price really can't be beat. At only $3.97-$4.49 depending on sale location you're getting a celebrity-status (at least in the internet beauty realm) pencil for mere pennies compared to its competitors. Also, this pencil lives up to the hype in terms of dreamy creaminess. It applies effortlessly without the need to warm it up before hand; just uncap and go without fear of tugging or hurting the delicate skin on/around your eyes. More importantly though, this kohl pencil is actually black like its name claims. It's quite sad that that needs to be confirmed nowadays but, with many pencils on the market boasting the name "black" only to appear charcoal grey at best when applied to the skin, this is definitely one aspect of the SCANDALEYES Waterproof Kohl Kajal that Rimmel can truly brag about.

As I'm sure you can tell by the photos above, this is where the review goes from good to bad. This eyeliner is absolutely not not NOT waterproof like it so proudly claims. I allowed those swatches on my hand to set for five minutes before lightly (I'm talking eyelash kisses light) running my dry finger across them. Yup… this smudging was without the addition of water. Curious to see what water does? Take a gander:

This is what happens every time I apply the Rimmel SCANDALEYES to my upper inner lash line. Within five or ten minutes you can already see a patchy transfer of it onto the waterline and within the first hour it will start to smudge down onto your lower lids (a scientific process that I'll never begin to understand; how does it get there!?). It's essentially just a big smudgy mess fest that takes you from crisp lined eyes to sad panda face in a matter of minutes. I'm not sure if this happens because of the ultra creamy formula or what but I can assure you it's not because I have oily lids like the above photo suggests; that's purely the elegant effect of flash photography in your dimly lit bathroom (gotta change that lightbulb…) because the sun has long since set for the day.
Yarg.

I'm not sure what I'm going to end up doing with my Rimmel SCANDALEYES Waterproof Kohl Kajal since I clearly can't use it on my inner lash/waterline and wouldn't even dream of putting it around my eyes as a liner because that'll likely go from lid to cheek in a matter of minutes. Oh well, like said it was a cheap buy so it wasn't too much money wasted but I'm still pretty upset that this kohl pencil didn't live up to the beauty blogosphere induced hype. I've got a feeling it's because I mainly only saw reviews of the nude version and thus people wouldn't notice it smudging… that's just a hypothesis though and I'm afraid I don't care enough about nude eyeliners to test it out.

Have you tried the Rimmel SCANDALEYES Waterproof Kohl Kajal?
Love it? Hate it?
What's your favorite black liner for the inner lash line that's actually waterproof?
Do share!!

  1. I bought this to try out myself, but after reading your review I may return it :/
I love the Scandal Eyes in Nude and thought I would love this one.

    1. It sounds like the formula is different for all the different colors in this line... Such a shame!! There does seem to be an overall feeling of 'not good' on the black on though so you may want to return it like you said :(

  2. This is my go-to eyeliner and I love it! But I never use it on the waterline. When used as a regular liner, it sets pretty much waterproof. I may get a tiny bit of fading but no smudging. I don't need a makeup remover to take it off but I can definitely cut onions and not worry about crying it away.

    1. Huh that's interesting to hear, I may have to give that a try before I throw it out! Regardless I'm happy to hear that you've found a way to make this work for you :)

  3. I just recently purchased my second black Rimmel ScandalEyes WP pencil. The first one I loved, I was able to tightline without it transferring to my lower waterline. I also have the Nude pencil, which stays in my lower waterline. My recent replacement of the black smears like nothing I have experienced. I don't get it, because this was HG material. I wonder if I got a bad one, or they adjusted the formula for the worse.

Just a heads up, I tried the new Jordana Liquid Eyeliner pencils that are WP and have been hyped. I had the same experience as I did with Rimmel.

    1. Oh no, maybe they changed the formula???? Yarggggg what a shame… I'll never understand why companies take a perfect formula and make it into crap :/ Thanks for letting me know on the Jordana liner. I think I found a winner in the Milani pencil though… stay tuned; I'm going to review it asap after I've had a little more time to play with it! :D

  4. I have the Taupe, nude and black of these and the black is definitely my least favourite! I get really bad smudging with it too, it's weird though because I don't find the taupe smudges at all. If you haven't tried it yet do try the taupe it's such a gorgeous unusual colour it's a lot softer than black :)

    1. Ugh it really does sound like from what everyone is saying that the black pencil in this line of liners (hehe) is an overall dud :( What a shame!! Glad to hear that the other colors live up to the hype though :)

  6. I've had some luck with the Jordana liners, so maybe that would be a good option? However, I found that the liquid liner would smudge if I rubbed my eyes..but I mean, I guess most liners would do that! Great review! I was considering picking up a few because of the hype, but I might need to reconsider!

    1. Thanks for your input Louise!! I'm always happy to hear all of you guy's opinions on products :D It sounds like the other colors are better in formula so maybe you can still give them a try and fall in love with them… just don't go for the black ;)

  7. you should try the Avon pencils, they're very similar to scandaleyes but a lot more creamy, not waterproof though.
A really nice waterproof liner is Bourjois clubbing, i did a quick blog post on it, creamy, resistant and cool color

    1. Shoot if they're not waterproof then they're a no-go for me :/ Thanks anyways! Sounds like the Bourjois one might be a winner though, I'll have to look into it.

  9. i've tried this stuff too and didn't really like it.. it definitely wasn't waterproof for me either and for some reason every time i used it it made my eye itch so I'm thinking there's something in it that my skin didn't like. so no bueno for me too :(

  10. I had the same experience with the Milani Liquif'eye and even the Urban Decay 24/7 liners. The least smudgy pencil I've found is Stila's Smudge Stick (ironic, but it doesn't smudge for me once it's set). It still transfers a tiny bit around my outer corner, but everything else is worse. For my lower waterline I LOVE gel liner, it stays a lot longer than pencil for me, but I haven't tried it on my upper waterline.

    1. Yup I love the smudge sticks for their non-smudgeyness haha! I've heard of a lot of people using gel liner on their waterline… I'll have to try it myself some day :)

  11. Please allow me to ask a dumb question-- why do you need a upper inner lash line liner? I thought your liner, as you have been doing it, was perfection!

  13. I use the Mary Kay gel eyeliner... It's the best for me. Sandly, it was limited edition in Mexico, so I 'll have to look for a new one very soon.

  14. My favorite eyeliner has become the Too Faced Perfect Eyes Eyeliner Waterproof Eyeliner in Perfect Espresso (but good lord at the long name). Their black version is also really good with not smudging as far at I can tell; I line both waterlines with it. The only thing is the price point, that is if you buy from a store retailer and not online retailer.

  15. I've had this at the bottom of my drawer for ages and haven't even tried it yet. Yuck, can't say I'm looking forward to it now. Smudged eyeliner is so 10 years ago (showing my age here). I used to spend ages trying to get my eyeliner smudged just right. If you're going for the rock'n'roll style you could get a lot of use out of this ;)
